- An SME’s digitalization first affects its internal processes: customer relations, invoices, shared documents and data-driven management.
- According to France Num, 88% of small businesses and SMEs use a management tool in 2026. Invoicing software is used by 94% of SMEs with 50 to 249 employees.
- Every VAT-registered company must be able to receive electronic invoices since September 1, 2026. SMEs will have to issue them from September 1, 2027.
- The obstacles measured concern perceived usefulness, budget, skills and cybersecurity. In one year, 39% of small businesses and SMEs suffered a cyber incident.
- France Num, run by the Directorate General for Enterprise, lists more than 4,000 Activators. Its search engine covers nearly 200 public support schemes.
Talking about SME digitalization often means talking about websites or social media. Yet much of the subject plays out behind the scenes: following up a customer, issuing an invoice, sharing a document. This internal side is accelerating, driven by the e-invoicing reform. A sales management CRM for SMEs is one of its building blocks. Here are the figures, the processes involved, the obstacles measured and the public schemes currently available.
SME digitalization: what are we talking about?
Digitalization means moving a process from paper, word of mouth or spreadsheets to a shared digital tool. In an SME, it mainly targets the back office: sales, administration, finance, documents. Employees enter information once, then everyone finds it in the same place. The goals: less re-keying, more efficiency, controlled costs.
Marketing and customer acquisition fall outside this scope. They belong to a digital strategy focused on online presence. Digitalization also differs from the organization’s digital transformation, which affects ways of working and decision-making. It forms its technical foundation. A grid helps assess a company’s level of digital transformation.
The level of digital equipment in French SMEs
Two public sources measure the phenomenon. Conducted by Crédoc, the 2026 France Num Barometer surveys 9,655 companies with 0 to 249 employees. INSEE’s ICT survey covers companies with 10 or more employees.
Management tools already well established
In 2026, 88% of the companies surveyed use at least one management tool. The rate of equipment in digital tools rises with headcount.
| Digital solutions | 10 to 19 employees | 20 to 49 employees | 50 to 249 employees | All small businesses and SMEs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Invoicing software | 86% | 90% | 94% | 71% |
| Accounting software | 85% | 93% | 94% | 71% |
| Enterprise resource planning (ERP) or multi-purpose software | 38% | 50% | 52% | 22% |
| Online document sharing platform | 67% | 70% | 81% | 56% |
| Professional collaboration solution | 56% | 66% | 80% | 40% |
| Electronic signature | 51% | 60% | 62% | 38% |
| Data exchange between software | 23% | 34% | 40% | 15% |
Source: France Num Barometer 2026. The last row stands out. Only 40% of organizations with 50 to 249 employees report a data exchange solution between software.
Artificial intelligence is advancing fast
According to France Num, 53% of SMEs use an artificial intelligence solution in 2026, compared with 34% in 2025. INSEE reports lower rates in 2025: 15% between 10 and 49 employees, 31% between 50 and 249. The gap comes from the definitions, scope and year of the two surveys. In both cases, adoption of these new technologies follows company size. According to INSEE, 73% of companies using AI rely on paid cloud services, compared with 33% of the others.
Internal processes at the heart of digitalization
Four families of processes account for most digital transformation projects: selling, invoicing, sharing, deciding. These challenges overlap, as the same data flows from one to another.
Sales management and customer relations
Tracking prospects, quotes and customer history often lives in spreadsheets or mailboxes. Customer relationship management software, or CRM, brings this information together in a single database. Implementing it affects sales reps, but also sales administration. The customer experience depends on it: every contact can see the history before an exchange. According to France Num, 53% of companies already use their customer and sales data to manage the business. Cirrus Shield, for example, centralizes customers, opportunities and sales follow-up in a customizable CRM.
Quotes, invoicing and the e-invoicing timeline
Invoicing is undergoing its biggest change in years. Since September 1, 2026, every VAT-registered company in France must be able to receive electronic invoices. Large and mid-sized companies must also issue them from that date. SMEs and micro-businesses switch over on September 1, 2027.
The invoice goes through an approved platform, or through a compatible solution connected to such a platform. A PDF attached to an email does not meet this definition. Four new mandatory mentions are added for SMEs in 2027, including the customer’s SIREN number.
In spring 2026, 72% of equipped small businesses and SMEs considered their software compatible with the reform. But 18% did not know. Formats, e-reporting and penalties are detailed in this overview of mandatory e-invoicing.
Document management and collaborative tools
Contracts, delivery notes, expense reports, procedures: the volume of documents grows with headcount. In companies with 50 to 249 employees, 81% use an online document sharing platform. Electronic signature reaches 62%. These collaborative digital solutions replace printouts, postal mailings and duplicated attachments. Employees access the same information, in the office or on the move. On the storage side, 67% of small businesses and SMEs back up their data externally, notably in the cloud.
Data and performance management
The last level concerns decision-making. In 2026, 76% of the companies surveyed use their data to manage the business. Business software, ERP or CRM, remains the most cited solution, ahead of spreadsheets. Only 31% rely on a cross-functional dashboard. Automated KPI reporting for an SME extends this approach, with automation of data collection tasks.
Documented obstacles to digitalization
The obstacles to this transition are less technical than related to perception, costs and skills. Public surveys highlight five of them.
- Less perceived usefulness: 71% of managers see a real benefit in digital, 7 points less than in 2025. SMEs remain at 83%.
- Shrinking budgets: 33% made no dedicated digital spending in 2025, 8 points more.
- Declining skills: 66% believe they have digital skills, 4 points less. Only 21% took digital training in 2025.
- Cyber risk: 39% suffered a cybersecurity incident in twelve months. And 53% of managers fear losing their data or having it hacked.
- Lack of AI expertise: according to INSEE, 71% of companies without AI see no use for it. And 54% cite a lack of expertise.
For advice, 41% of managers now turn first to their chartered accountant, a 23-point jump in one year.
Public support and assistance schemes in 2026
Several public schemes support business digitalization in October 2026. They cover diagnostics, training and funding. France Num links digital adoption to the growth and competitiveness of small businesses and SMEs.
France Num and its Activators
France Num is the government initiative for the digital transformation of small businesses and SMEs. The Directorate General for Enterprise runs it with 70 partners, including the Regions. Its directory lists more than 4,000 France Num Activators: advisers, consultants, trainers and software publishers. It can be filtered by expertise, such as customer relationship management. The site also lists digital training courses and self-assessment tools.
Any company registered with a CCI or CMA can also carry out a digital maturity audit. This diagnostic, with an action plan, is free or paid depending on the case.
National and regional financial support
Support varies by region, sector and company size. With CMA France, France Num offers a search engine covering nearly 200 schemes. It includes the State, the Regions and local authorities: digital vouchers, grants, loans.
For e-invoicing, the DGFiP publishes a practical guide and the list of approved platforms on impots.gouv.fr. According to France Num, 64% of small businesses and SMEs are or have been supported by their accountant in this reform. The share drops to 41% among companies with 50 to 249 employees.
